Abstract

The traditional oil mining activity in Wonocolo, Bojonegoro Regency, East Java, is a legacy of the energy industry that has been operating since the colonial era and is now managed by local communities. This mining activity has a significant influence on the economic dynamics of the community, particularly in terms of income and various forms of family investment. This study aims to analyze the income levels of oil mining communities and examine the impact of oil mining businesses on educational, health, property, and retirement fund investments. Employing a mixed-method approach, this research combines qualitative analysis using NVivo software to explore narratives and experiences of the mining community, and quantitative analysis with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) through SmartPLS to statistically test relationships between variables. The results show that traditional oil mining has a significant contribution to increasing community income and positively affects their ability to invest in various economic and social sectors. However, these benefits are accompanied by sustainability challenges due to market uncertainties, oil price fluctuations, and the lack of long-term financial planning among the mining population. This study provides empirical contributions to the development of a local resource-based economic sustainability model and offers policy recommendations for the government and local communities to integrate mining practices with sustainable development.
